The hard drive and its controller are right next to each other in the rack, but they are connected with about 50 feet of cable! The SMD interface includes a 60 conductor control cable and a 26 conductor data cable. Here I’ve cleaned them and neatly rolled up the excess in the bottom of the rack. There are other comically long cables in this system, but this is the longest pair.
